“Fashion tells a story about us and the world around us and what is happening to us,do not ignore it.

The Big 4 fashion capitals  of the Fashion world are London,Milan,New York and Paris.

Why I watch the trends coming off the runway from the Fashion weeks set in these fashion  capitals is because the designers at these events have their fingers on  the pulse of what is  driving  the world around us.

Having watched what is coming off the runway in the past few months, you quickly realize that the world is becoming a much more integrated place and fashion is reflecting this by fusing different cultural elements together.

African print is making its presence felt on the runway felt, the vibrant colors that are a hall mark of the continent are increasingly finding  their way on the runways in these fashion capitals.

Stella McCartney a British fashion designer last year used Ankara fabric in her Spring/Summer 2018 collection ,Ankara  is a wax print whose origins can be traced to West Africa in her collection  and is  a fabric very popular across the continent. It can make everything from clothes for every day wear to show stoppers for formal functions.

Louis Vuitton in their Spring/Summer 2012 men’s wear collection  featured hats, shirts and scarves made from fabric very similar to the Maasai shuka- a traditional chequered blanket available in a variety of colors popular among the Maasai communities of Kenya and Tanzania.

Last year designer Andrew GN in his 2017 Fall collection had the models on his show have their hair braided in a manner that mimics   the way African women wear their hair.A closer look at the colors and prints through out his collection, with its animal print, earthy colors and chunky accessories was a celebration of the fusion of cultures and a celebration of globalization.

Check out the rest of Andrew GN Fall collection.

That we can have the fashion industry celebrating cultures from all the 4 corners of the world, where designers are influenced by cultures not their own , is indeed a testament to how far we have come and to how far we still have to go.We still need more African models on the runways sporting African designs and we need more designers from Africa celebrating the continents diverse cultures and talents.

2018 will be an interesting year in the fashion industry, watching 2017 shows,we are seeing a modesty and simplicity slipping through to the runway,a love for pastels and influence from different cultures is clearly being recognized and celebrated.Models are also becoming more diverse and there are more African ,Asian faces than before ,and more cities are getting noticed as they seek to join the Big 4 of the fashion industry. We have  Dubai  becoming  a place to watch as it hosts the Arab Fashion Week in late April ,with its ready to wear apparel heavily influenced by Arab culture it has quickly become a favorite among fashion houses that are looking further than Europe,Asia and America for business.

If you want to keep abreast with what is coming off the runway you may want to see the dates of the fashion weeks in the Big 4 capitals of fashion London,Milan,New York and Paris ,use this calendar.

A good reason to watch what happens in fashion is because we do not just wear clothes, our clothes express who we are,our aspirations, values and by watching what comes off the runway you will have a pretty good idea about the things that are driving the world around us.Through the clothes you see on the runway, those are stories being told,by designers, about us and the world around us.

Happy New Year and have  a truly inspiring 2018!

FASHION SHOW SEATING ETIQUETE

Female models walking on catwalk
Female models walking on catwalk

You get invited to the Paris  fashion week, knowing how packed it is going to be you want the front row seats

Getting there you make  a bee line for the front row seats, they are all labeled reserved and the only seats left vacant are the two last rows.

Why you ask yourself?

There is a reason for that and i am going to let you in on the secret.

Fashion show seating arrangements are a culture by themselves.

The seating logic is pretty simple when it comes to seating arrangements, the more important you are the closer you are to the all the action.

The golden tickets are the front row seats, that is where you find top  fashion writers, photographers, invited guests and celebrities.

Friends of the designer ,interns and other guests then  sit at the back or even stand.

Making seat arrangements is the preserve of a PR agency, don’t harbor any hard feeling towards the designer if you happen to be friends.

Do you have any questions or comments,we would be happy to answer them.Or just leave a comment to say you passed by.

HOW TO BE EFFORTLESSLY STYLISH

Simplicity

Like  all most girls i love being stylishly dressed when i can.

I have mentioned before my continued interest in Pinterest and fashion blogs  .

And i do spend  a considerable amount of time looking for ways to appear stylish without it being too obvious.

Here is to being stylishly chic in 3 easy steps.

1.Wear clothes that fit

We cannot emphasize too much about wearing clothes that fit,not too tight or hanging to loose. They need to skim your body.

Get  clothes that don’t fit  tailored by a qualified seamstress to create a fitting outfit.

2.Don’t be too obvious with your love for luxury brands. The most stylish people i know do not wear the most expensive clothes or luxury brands.

Invest in classic pieces and learn how to pair them for a timeless ,effortless look .

3.Don’t over accessorize. One statement piece of jewellery is enough.

This goes for your hairstyle and make up to,keep it simple and not overly done.

How else do you think we can be stylish without being slaves to fashion, share your advice with us in the comments section.

XO,

Ina

HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF MATTERS…

Keep your head up!...photo source lashyaup.com
Keep your head up!…photo source lashyaup.com

How do you see yourself?

As a human being and as a human being?

Does your being here mean something?

Of course it does.

As women we tend to underestimate ourselves and society answers this by under valuing us and  we get caught up in gender battles as to who is better, smarter, stronger.

Yet the most amazing thing about all these gender wars is what we forget, what we never talk about.

We are created equal but different.

Women can make a difference just  as they are.

By changing the way we see ourselves we change the way society values us.

Our worth is not in who we wear, what we wear, the jobs we hold, the children we have or do not have.

It is just in that simple fact that we are here.

We are here because we matter and we can make a difference.

Change the way you see yourself today and see the spring in your step come back, the smile that lights up your eyes and suddenly  life becomes beautiful.

Again.

How do you see yourself?
